Taught By:
Jess VanderWier
Registered Psychotherapist & Mom of 3
Jess is a registered psychotherapist in Ontario, Canada who has worked with thousands of families navigating the challenges of raising strong-willed children. Her connection-based approach helps parents understand the “why” behind their child’s behaviour so that they can respond with confidence rather than frustration.
As a mom of three (including her own strong-willed daughter), Jess knows firsthand what it’s like to feel like you’re constantly butting heads with your child. She’s been through the morning battles, the bedtime protests, and the moments where nothing you try seems to work.
Jess’s unique framework helps you see your child’s defiance as communication, not manipulation, and gives you practical tools to become the calm, confident leader your child needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have access to the course?
For the lifetime of our learning platform! We offer this for two reasons:
- Parents are often busy and tired. You need to be able to access this course when you find the time and energy!
- Children’s needs and struggles change as they develop. You can skip ahead to the lessons you need right now and come back for the rest when you need it!
What age is this course useful for?
This course was designed for parents of children aged 2 to 8 years old. It’s for parents of toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children. The principles apply even beyond age 8, but the examples and strategies are focused on this age range.
How long does this course take to complete?
The course contains 32 focused video lessons, plus a printable companion workbook. The longest video is under 5 minutes. We intentionally kept lessons short so you can learn one strategy, try it, and come back for the next one when you’re ready. You could watch the entire course in a long afternoon, but most parents prefer to take one module at a time and practice before moving on. The workbook gives you a quick reference so you donโt have to rewatch a lesson every time you need a reminder.
Will this stop the tantrums completely?
Tantrums and big emotions are a normal part of childhood, so no, they won’t disappear entirely. What this course will give you is the understanding to know WHY they’re happening and the tools to respond in a way that reduces their frequency and intensity over time. You’ll also learn how to stay calm when they do happen.
How long does it take to get results?
Many parents notice small shifts right away, especially when they start using “Connect Before You Direct” or adding playfulness. Meaningful change usually happens over 2-4 weeks of consistent practice. Like all things parenting, there are no guarantees, which is why we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What makes this course different from other parenting courses?
Most parenting advice falls into two camps: either “give in to keep the peace” or “crack down and show them who’s boss.” Neither works long-term.
This course takes a different approach. We help you understand the ROOT CAUSE of your child’s strong-willed behaviour, whether it’s separation anxiety, sensory sensitivity, fear, or situational stress, so that you can address the real issue, not just the symptoms. You’ll become the calm, confident leader your child needs, without punishment or power struggles.
Will this work for my highly sensitive or spirited child?
Yes. This course is designed with sensitive, spirited, and intense children in mind. We have lessons specifically addressing sensory sensitivities and how to adapt your approach for children who feel everything deeply.
Is the course self-paced, or do I have to watch it at a certain time?
The course is completely self-paced. Once you sign up, you’ll have access to all the material and can review it on your own time, at your own speed. And you can revisit the content whenever you need it for years to come!
If I have questions while I take the course, can I ask them?
Inside the course, you’ll find lesson discussions. These discussions are a place where parents can ask their questions related to the course material. Our team of experts will help point you to the videos or handouts in the course to help you get your questions answered!
My child is under 2. Is it too early for this course?
While the course is specifically designed for ages 2-8, many of the foundational concepts (understanding your child’s alarm system, the importance of connection, co-regulation) apply to younger children too. If your child is 18 months or older and already showing strong-willed tendencies, you’ll gain valuable insights and be prepared for what’s ahead.
How is this course different from your free content?
Our free content gives you quick tips and strategies you can try right away. The course gives you the complete system. A full framework that builds lesson by lesson, a companion workbook you can keep on hand, and real-life scenario walkthroughs for the specific battles most parents face. It’s the difference between individual tips and a structured approach you can follow from start to finish.
